Q&A: 8 Incarcerated Parents on Caring for Kids From behind Bars – Raising a child in prison means little contact, frequent worries and many tears.

“How do parents raise children from behind bars? And what is the impact of a prison-separated relationship?   We asked incarcerated mothers and fathers at five prisons in Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin about parenting from prison. To do this the three of us — we are connected through various prison programs — created a questionnaire and interviewed people at our respective institutions in Ohio and Michigan. The questionnaires were all mailed back to Christopher Monihan, who compiled the interviews with the parents and submitted them to PJP.”  The Prison Project put a series of questions to eight incarcerated parents.  The answers will stir you.  https://prisonjournalismproject.org/2023/10/19/how-to-parent-from-prison/?utm_source=Prison+Journalism+Project+Inside+Story+Subscribers&utm_campaign=4fc3193073-Oct22_InsideStory&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_-d92eab52de-%5BLIST_EMAIL_ID%5D&mc_cid=4fc3193073&mc_eid=51ba856069   (CF also articles linked on bottom of page on both Father’s Day and Mother’s Day while in prison.)  Related article: Prison Journalism Project – Preston J. Condemn the Crimes, Comprehend the Context

The scene and the reporting from Gaza and Israel more and more urges people to take sides but ignores that crimes against persons, children included, are occurring on both sides and one evil proposed to justify another.  “If there’s one thing everyone should take away from the conflict in Israel and Palestine over the past couple weeks – and in fact, from conflicts everywhere over the past forever – it’s this: atrocities do not justify atrocities…   There are no excuses for war crimes. Rules are rules. Atrocities do not justify atrocities.    https://www.hrw.org/the-day-in-human-rights/2023/10/25?utm_medium=email&utm_source=the-day-in-human-rights&utm_campaign=2023-10-25    Related article: Toronto Star – Robin Sears   When war fever seizes the world, restrain your rhetoric – Today, let us not escalate anger and possibly violence, by indulging in hot-blooded or worse, partisan rhetoric, no matter what side you are on.  https://www.thestar.com/opinion/contributors/when-war-fever-seizes-the-world-restrain-your-rhetoric/article_f040d251-f130-5ac9-88bb-6010504a35fe.html?source=newsletter&utm_content=a05&utm_source=ts_nl&utm_medium=email&utm_email=404CAADEF7EB839FC77B1B04F0C251E1&utm_campaign=top_202445

5 dead, including 3 children, in intimate partner violence in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.  Police say 44-year-old shooter died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound

The gruesome reporting of still more needless domestic violence involving the death of children is horrendous in itself but even more so is the realization that Ontario (and Canada) has been here before and has endless reports lying on shelves with coroner’s recommendations to avoid or mitigate the impact of domestic violence.  Sault Ste. Marie police Chief Hugh Stevenson:  “”The grief the families, friends and loved ones of the victims are facing is unimaginable. Our hearts go out to them. As our community grieves this tragedy, I urge everyone to please watch out for each other. If you are struggling, or if you see someone you know struggling, please make use of the mental health supports available in our community…. We need to take care of each other.”  https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/sudbury/sault-five-dead-intimate-partner-violence-1.7006078  Related article: Toronto Star –  Ivy Mak and Kieran Leavitt  ‘Unspeakable tragedy’: 3 children and 2 adults, including shooter, dead after Sault Ste. Marie shootings – Police say the incident was “result of intimate partner violence” and there is no ongoing risk to public safety.  (Ed note: The assurance from police about this one incident is not very re-assuring given the frequency and severity of domestic violence and our capacity for repeatedly ignoring solutions.)  https://www.thestar.com/news/canada/unspeakable-tragedy-3-children-and-2-adults-including-shooter-dead-after-sault-ste-marie-shootings/article_a91ea71c-717b-59aa-b12d-df81adc1e584.html Related article: Canadian Press  Investigation ongoing in 5 deaths in Sault Ste. Judge approves historic $23B First Nations child welfare compensation agreement – The settlement agreement is the largest ever in Canada

What’s the penalty for the federal government failure to pay adequate support for the foster care and family services for impacted Aboriginal children?  The maximum at $40,000 per person ordered by a Human Rights Tribunal, appealed by the feds and now settled by a federal court.  Zacheus Trout of Cross Lake First Nation in Manitoba:  “I hope this brings a change of how we look at Indigenous people and how we can move forward, reconciling all the differences between non-Indigenous and the Indigenous people right across Canada… It’s history that’s been made here today.”  https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/judge-approves-23-billion-first-nations-child-welfare-agreement-1.7006351  Related article: Canadian Press – Alessia Passafiume    Federal Court approves $23B First Nations child-welfare settlement – Federal Court approves $23B child-welfare deal   https://www.thecanadianpressnews.ca/politics/federal-court-approves-23b-first-nations-child-welfare-settlement/article_60605ace-fc1b-5cdb-8a9c-89fcd9104c34.html?utm_source=thecanadianpressnews.ca&utm_campaign=%2Fnewsletter%2Foptimize%2Fdaily-newsletter%2F%3F-dc%3D1698244239&utm_medium=email&utm_content=read%20more

A fine line: Finding the right seniors’ poverty measure in Canada

This is a timely report with an executive summary outlining the various methods used to declare poverty in Canada.  The authors suggest a deficiency when either the market basket measure or the Low income Level measure is used for seniors.  Having present the inadequacies, the authors then challenge common assumptions about living costs for seniors and suggest four steps to address the problems.  The report represents a breakthrough on poverty issues as applied to the seniors.  https://maytree.com/publications/a-fine-line-finding-the-right-seniors-poverty-measure-in-canada/?mc_cid=e8e9078908&mc_eid=d3ca2ffb1f   (Full report:  https://maytree.com/wp-content/uploads/A-fine-line.pdf   Related article:  Canadian Press – Darryl Greer   Food Banks Canada report paints dire picture of Canada-wide affordability crisis – Food bank usage skyrocketing across Canada  https://www.thecanadianpressnews.ca/politics/food-banks-canada-report-paints-dire-picture-of-canada-wide-affordability-crisis/article_aeaa2e32-5409-58fc-b57c-17256354ffd8.html?utm_source=thecanadianpressnews.ca&utm_campaign=%2Fnewsletter%2Foptimize%2Fdaily-newsletter%2F%3F-dc%3D1698244239&utm_medium=email&utm_content=read%20more
